THE HISTORY OF WHITE PLAINS
As the county seat and commercial hub of Westchester County, NY, White Plains has long been considered a popular tourist destination. During the Dutch settlement in the early 1600s, traders first referred to the land as “White Plains,” and historians theorize that the name originates from the luscious groves of white balsam that populated the area.
Another common theory is that the name derived from the heavy white mist that moved off of the Bronx River and onto the mainland. White Plains is most commonly known as an area in which George Washington’s troops achieved great success in the struggle for independence against the British. Given its rich history, White Plains has slowly developed into a popular tourist destination.
