The History of Rye

The city of Rye, not to be confused with the town of Rye which is a separate entity, is a suburb of New York City that is located specifically within Westchester. This city, which previously was situated as a village until 1942, has attracted many families due to its welcoming, suburbia feel that still provides the amenities of the city not far away. Rye has often been voted as one of the best places to live within the state because of its many attractive features. Within the city, a number of activities including diverse restaurants, expansive parks, and independent coffee shops are available to entertain those who decide to live in or visit the area.

HISTORY OF RYE:

In 1660, the first settlers from England began to arrive in the area that was at the time taken up by the local Siwanoy and Algonquin Native American tribes. The settlers bought out the land and began to live there — which had been named Rye in honor of a coastal sea town from their home in England. During the colonial period, the town became important within the colonies as a stop for stagecoaches and travelers along their route, however, this soon came to an end after the Revolutionary War came about which had a detrimental effect on Rye’s development.

This left the community in a dilapidated state until the early 20th century when a positive impact was experienced by them due to the introduction of the railroad. Many wealthy citizens from New York City started travelling to the coastal town during their summers while others would soon follow. These new guests constructed lavish homes along with quaint suburban complexes that can still be viewed to this very day.
